PUBG might not command the limelight like Fortnite, but PUBG Corporation is still out here delivering a solid battle royale experience and trying to innovate a bit. Vikendi will still be available in PUBG, but only for custom matches. The developer has revealed Season 6, which begins with game update 6.1. First and foremost is the addition of a brand-new island, Karakin, which is replacing Vikendi in the normal server rotation.
Karakin is a 2×2 km island designed for 64 players, making it one of the smallest maps in PUBG to date. According to the developer, it’s intended to be fast paced with a great deal of tension.
“It’s small, fast, and dangerous: Expect the tension of Miramar combined with the pace of Sanhok. Karakin is a 64 players map. Players should expect long distance rifle engagements in the mountains, tactical urban conflict, and claustrophobic underground combat,” explained the developer in the Patch Notes.
Karakin features a brand-new hazard mechanic for PUBG called the Black Zone. The Black Zone is similar to the Red Zone, in that it will be a random part of the map that will fall under attack. Denoted by a purple circle on the map, the Black Zone will level buildings within its influence, with the potential to destroy them completely. And since the zone is random, it’ll actually change the overall composition of Karakin matches. Buildings can come out of a Black Zone hazard unharmed, partially destroyed, or totally flattened, meaning players need to be flexible.
Destruction isn’t only limited to the Black Zone though. PUBG has even hidden some secret areas behind breach points, so get to exploring. Finally, Karakin also has bullet penetration on weak walls, meaning you won’t even need to breach to attack players camping inside certain buildings. There’s also the new Sticky Bomb weapon, which can be used to open breach points on structures. Buildings will have breach points on certain walls or floors, allowing attackers to reach campers or snipers to create new sight lines.
Season 6 also kicks off a new Survivor Pass and adds a new vehicle, the flying Motor Glider, to Erangel and Miramar. Personally, I’d say it’s better to avoid flying, but that’s just the guy deathly afraid of pinpoint snipers talking. While flying is pretty useful, it also makes you a target and you need a bit of runway to take off.
PUBG Season 6 is currently on the test server, and it’ll be coming to PC on January 22 and consoles January 30. PUBG Corporation is still expanding the brand with an upcoming narrative experience, and an entirely new game from creator Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene.
